After a breakfast of local specialities, alight from the barge to enjoy a private visit to the magnificent baroque Château de Vaux-le-Vicomte, masterpiece of 17th-century parliamentarian Nicolas Fouquet and a location for the 1998 film "The Man in the Iron Mask". After the tour, a morning-tea reception is hosted in the glorious gardens. Return to the barge for lunch and then enjoy a tranquil afternoon’s cruising to rural Courtaron. Dinner is served on board.

Day 3, Tuesday
The day begins with a morning cruise to the town of Château-Thierry on the River Marne, giving you ample chance to relax on deck and soak up the lush scenery. Lunch on board is followed by a visit to Belleau Wood, site of a famous World War I battle, when American soldiers stopped the progression of the German army. Continue to the 420-acre Aisne-Marne American Cemetery and Memorial where 2,288 soldiers are buried. Return to the barge, where your private chef has prepared a delicious dinner.

Day 4, Wednesday
Today, we cruise upstream to Cumières, mooring place for Hautvillers, “the birthplace of champagne”. It was at Hautvillers Abbey that the monk Dom Pérignon perfected the winemaking process leading to the effervescent drink we know and love today. Following lunch, visit the Champagne house of Billecart Salmon, where we enjoy a visit the vineyard and learn about the vinification process which is followed by a tasting of the house’s finest champagnes. Proceed to Hautvillers Abbey to visit Dom Pérignon’s tomb before enjoying a champagne picnic overlooking the picturesque town and river. In the evening a sumptuous dinner has been arranged at Hostellerie La Briqueterie, a Michelin-starred restaurant in the heart of the vineyards, just a short drive from the barge.

Day 5, Thursday
Leaving the River Marne and joining the Canal Latéral à la Marne, the barge cruises east to Tours-sur-Marne. During this part of the journey, you have the chance to stretch your legs along the scenic towpath, either on foot or by using one of the barge bicycles. Following lunch on board, alight for an afternoon visit to the family vineyard of Champagne Ployez-Jacquemart in Ludes, visiting cellars that were used to hide members of the Royal Air Force during World War II. Enjoy an exclusive tasting hosted in the family home by Laurence Ployez, the founder’s granddaughter. Back on the barge another sparkling evening awaits, as an ambassador from Champagne Laurent-Perrier arrives to host a tasting of the champagne house’s famed collection. A local jazz group plays, and dinner is served on board.

Day 6, Friday
A morning cruise towards Châlons-en-Champagne offers another chance to alight and walk or cycle along the canal path. After lunch, you are driven to the splendid city of Reims, not just an important centre of champagne production but where some 34 French sovereigns were crowned. Enjoy a visit to the immense, Gothic cathedral, where the glittering coronations took place, before having a guided tour of the Musée des Beaux-Arts, an 18th-century abbey housing a rich collection of artworks. Return to the barge for the Captain’s Farewell Dinner and toast the end of a fascinating and enriching week.
