Itinerary

Châlons-en-Champagne to La Ferté-sous-Jouarre

Day 1, Sunday
Before the cruise begins, your private chauffeur will meet you and drive you to the magnificent Château Vaux-le-Vicomte. Enjoy a tour of the baroque masterpiece, former home of 17th-century parliamentarian Nicolas Fouquet, and a leisurely walk through the spectacular gardens. Continue to the barge, where you’re welcomed aboard with an effervescent champagne reception, including a tasting session, and the chance to meet your captain and crew. Meanwhile, your chef is preparing your first gourmet dinner of the week.

Day 2, Monday
Following breakfast, set off on a guided tour of Châlons-en-Champagne, whose numerous attractions include the gothic Saint-Etienne Cathedral, museum of the Notre-Dame-en-Vaux Cloister with its remarkable statuary, and three glorious gardens. You then return to the barge for your first cruise, admiring the passing scenery along the canal as you enjoy a delicious lunch. In the afternoon, your guide takes you on a picturesque drive to the abbey in Hautvillers where Dom Pérignon’s tomb lies and from where you gain spectacular views over the vineyards. Before dinner, enjoy a tasting and a sabering demonstration at the family-run champagne house of Ployez-Jacquemart.

Day 3, Tuesday
This morning, we continue our leisurely journey along the canal. The slow pace means you can easily alight from the barge to stroll or cycle along the towpath. After lunch on board, enjoy a scenic drive to the house of Champagne J de Telmont, where you spend a fascinating afternoon participating in their unique oenological workshop.

Day 4, Wednesday
Rise early to accompany Chef to the charming covered market in Epernay. Here you can help select ingredients from the plump, seasonal produce available. While Chef returns to the barge to prepare lunch, stay and explore the attractive town. Wander down the Avenue de Champagne, an elegant street lined with prestigious champagne houses and swish courtyards. Enjoy a private tasting at Moêt & Chandon before returning to the boat for lunch. The rest of the afternoon is spent cruising to Jaulgonne, our mooring for the night.

Day 5, Thursday
After breakfast, enjoy a relaxed cruise along the winding River Marne to the charming village of Château-Thierry. Your guide will accompany you to a sumptuous Relais & Châteaux restaurant on the outskirts of Reims for lunch. Afterwards, enjoy a guided tour of the splendid city of Reims, not just an important centre of champagne production but where some 34 French sovereigns were crowned. Explore the beautiful gothic cathedral, the Musée des Beaux-Arts and the bountiful shops. Return to the barge for dinner.

Day 6, Friday
This morning, you set off on a picturesque drive to Belleau Wood, the site of a famous battle during World War I, when American troops halted the progression of the German army. Continue to the Aisne-Marne cemetery, containing the graves of 2,288 American soldiers. Before returning to the barge, head to the enchanting medieval town of Chézy-sur-Marne for a taste of the famous Brie de Meaux in a local fromagerie. Back on board, relax and enjoy a final gastronomic dinner as we cruise to Ferté-sous-Jouarre.

Day 7, Saturday
After breakfast, the crew bids you farewell as you disembark for your onward travel arrangements. We look forward to welcoming you back on board soon.
