Itinerary

Classic Cruise – Bordeaux

Day 1, Sunday
You are met in Bordeaux and transferred by private chauffeured minibus to Rosa. Following a champagne welcome, there is time for a stroll before returning for your first dinner on board.

Day 2, Monday
Morning cruise to Serignac-sur-Garonne, where we cross the Plan Canal d’Agen, one of the longest aqueducts in France which spans the River Garonne. After lunch we visit the medieval town of Nerac and tread in the footsteps of King of France Henry IV and Queen Margot. The château was built in the 15th century, but much was destroyed during the French Revolution and today only the impressive north wing remains. Finally, we stop at the Lapeyrade Estate for a cellar tasting of Armagnac, the oldest alcohol in France. Dinner on board.

Day 3, Tuesday
This morning, depart early to enjoy breakfast at the colourful market of Aiguillon and then cruise to your mooring at Buzet-sur-Baise, a pretty fortified village with pastel-coloured houses. Lunch on board is followed by an informative guided tour of the sustainable wine co-operative of Buzet, with a tasting of course! Next, visit the cork museum at Mezin to learn about the history of cork-making, before heading to the 13th century bastide village of Vianne. In the evening, go to Barbaste with its fortified mill, protected by four square towers, and the nearby 12th century bridge with its 12 curved arches. Dinner tonight is a gourmet affair at the “Auberge du Goujon qui frétille”, a delightful local restaurant with a highly inventive menu.

Day 4, Wednesday
Start the day with a relaxing cruise to the lovely little village of Lagruère, with time to walk or cycle the towpath through stunning countryside. Following lunch on board, cruise along the Garonne river aboard a traditional flat-bottomed boat, after which you will visit the beautiful village of Le Mas d’Agenais, its 11th century church playing host to an ornate Romanesque doorway and an original masterpiece by Rembrandt. After this, take a short drive to an artisanal dairy farm at Ramier where you will experience the entire cheese making process, culminating in a delicious tasting. Dinner, if the weather permits, is a gourmet barbecue beside the barge, overlooking the River Garonne.

Day 5, Thursday
Your morning cruise takes you to the village of Meilhan-sur-Garonne, with an expansive view over the valley of the Garonne. In the afternoon, visit the 14th century Château de Duras, an architectural wonder, which has been both a fortress and a stately home over its 900-year history. Wander through its 35 rooms and museum before returning to the hotel barge. Dinner on board.

Day 6, Friday
Today, your final cruise is to Castet-en-Dorthe, where the canal ends and drops into the River Garonne. After lunch on board, visit the medieval town of Saint Emilion, a UNESCO World Heritage site and centre of the most famous of the Bordeaux appellations. Later, we stop at Château Beau-Sejour-Becot, producer of premier and grand crus wines, where we discover the secrets of the vine and, of course, enjoy a tasting. Captain’s Farewell Dinner on board.

Day 7, Departure
After breakfast, you are transferred by private chauffeured minibus to their choice of location in Bordeaux.

Classic Cruise - Gascony

Day 1, Sunday
You are met in Toulouse and transferred by private chauffeured minibus to Rosa. Following a champagne welcome, there is time for a tour of the beautiful old town of Montauban, set on the River Tarn, before returning for your first dinner on board.

Day 2, Monday
This morning, take a short drive to an artisanal dairy farm at Ramier, where you will experience the entire cheese making process, culminating in a delicious tasting with the opportunity to purchase a few slices to take home! Next, head to old Montauban for a stroll around this charming redbrick town on the banks of the River Tarn. Following lunch on board, Rosa meanders up the flight of nine locks on the beautiful, recently restored branch canal skirting the Forest of Agre and moors in the heart of the little town of Montech. Dinner on board.

Day 3, Tuesday
After breakfast, head into the Côtes du Frontonnais wine region in the minibus for a wine tasting at the renowned Château Bellevue la Fôret. The introduction to the outstanding cuvée ‘Optimum’ is in the skilled hands of Diane Germain, the Boston-educated daughter of the house. Lunch back on board is followed by a guided tour of the remarkable inclined Water Plane, an amazing feat of engineering that by-passes five locks and allows our hotel barge to descend the 43 feet all in one go, a unique experience! In the afternoon, you will cruise to Castelsarrasin, where there may even be time for a game or two of boules before dinner on board.

Day 4, Wednesday
This morning, cross the River Tarn via the 1,000-foot-long aqueduct, the Pont Canal du Cacor, then descend towards Moissac through a staircase of delightful locks and moor for lunch on the River Tarn below the old watermill. Then, cruise downstream to St. Livrade for an optional afternoon’s swimming or canoeing and visit the UNESCO-classified 7th century Abbaye St-Pierre de Moissac with its wonderfully preserved cloisters and chapel. This evening, perhaps after a game of boules, stroll ashore to savour regional specialties at the excellent restaurant ‘Le Florentin’, in front of the spectacular entrance portal of the abbey.

Day 5, Thursday
Visit Castelsarrasin’s morning market this morning before starting your cruise, when Rosa rises up from the Tarn and turns west on the brick-lined canal through Moissac. After negotiating the swing bridge, cruise between the placidly-flowing waters of the Garonne and the foothills of the Quercy massif, before mooring at Pommevic. After lunch, visit the 18th century Château de la Motte where you are given a private guided tour by the resident Countess. At the end of the tour, you are even invited to take tea with her in the private apartments, as she explains to us her family’s famous association with the Kings of France. Before returning to Rosa, you will see the 15th century hillside village of Auvillar, as well as touring the old “Bastide” town of Valence d’Agen, with its Palladian canal-side public wash-house and arcaded market place. Dinner on board.

Day 6, Friday
A leisurely morning cruise through the bucolic countryside to your final mooring at Boé. After lunch, you visit Domaine de Lapeyrade for a guided tour and private tastings of their esteemed Armagnac and Floc du Gascogne wines in delightful surroundings, before visiting the medieval town of Nérac and its castle, once home to Henry IV of France. Captain’s Farewell Dinner on board.

Day 7, Saturday
After breakfast, you are transferred by private chauffeured minibus to your choice of location in Toulouse.
